Investigation Toolkit: What This Group Is For Resource
The cards below collect tools that reporters, advocates and researchers use to check whether a photo or video is what it claims to be, trace where an image came from, save web pages before they change or disappear, collect and study social media material, organize a long investigation, and stay safe while doing it. They follow the order of a typical verification job: Verify (reverse image search, face tools, metadata and forensics, deepfake checks), Preserve (web archiving), Collect (social media research), Organize (data organization and analysis) and Protect (advanced online safety). Most entries come from the Bellingcat Online Investigations Toolkit, a community-maintained list; every link here goes to the tool's own site, and each link is checked once a month. Treat results as leads to confirm with a second source, not as proof. Face search and people search raise real privacy and legal questions, so read the Privacy and Security section first and follow the law and each site's rules.
Reverse Image Search Tools Resource
Reverse image search finds where else a picture appears online and which copy is oldest. Reporters use it to test a viral photo, find the original photographer, spot a photo recycled from an older event, and locate a place or object. Run the same image through more than one engine, because each one indexes different parts of the web.

Facial Recognition Tools Resource
Tools that compare faces or search for look-alike faces. They can give a lead on who appears in a photo or whether two photos show the same person, but they make mistakes and a match is never an identification by itself. Using them on private people raises privacy, accuracy and legal concerns, and some of these sites are controversial. Confirm any lead with reporting before you publish a name.

Metadata and Image Forensics Resource
Metadata is the hidden information inside a photo or video: camera model, date, software and sometimes GPS location. Forensic tools look for signs of editing, such as cloned areas or compression that does not match. Use them to check a file you received and, with the removal tools, to strip identifying data from files you publish. Metadata can be missing or faked, so it supports other evidence rather than replacing it.

More Image and Media Tools Resource
Helpers that do not fit the other image groups: spotting AI-generated faces and fake audio, removing objects, joining photos into panoramas, finding duplicate files and arranging reference images. Detection tools are guesses with error rates, so use them to raise or lower suspicion, not to settle a question.

AVPrep™ App Non-AI tool Web only
Audio and video prep bench. Converts between MP4, MKV, WebM, MOV, GIF, MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG and Opus; shrinks a file to a target size by working back from its duration to a bitrate, re-encoding again if the first pass overshoots; and reads or rewrites metadata, including a one-click strip of every tag before publishing. Tag writing copies the streams through untouched, so quality is unchanged. Runs in the browser, nothing is uploaded.

Trim by timecode, downscale, change frame rate or channels. Runs in the browser, nothing is uploaded.

Hit a target size (email, messaging), cap resolution and frame rate, switch to H.264, H.265, ProRes, GIF or WebP, convert audio to MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC, ALAC and more with loudness to -14/-16/-23 LUFS, extract sound, or change the container without re-encoding. Every file is checked after it is made and nothing is ever overwritten. Runs in your browser with nothing uploaded, or download the faster PC version.
ImageStudio™ App AI tool Web only
AI image generator that only makes three sizes, all exact: 1024x1024 square, 1080x1920 vertical for Reels and Shorts, and 1920x1080 wide for headers and video. Pick OpenAI or Google Gemini, draft or final quality, and the server crops and sizes the result to the pixel, strips all metadata, and saves PNG, JPG and WebP. Monthly spend cap and history. Sign-in required.
Thumbnail Swap™ App Non-AI tool Web only
Replace the embedded thumbnail or cover picture inside a single file: the EXIF preview in a JPEG, the thumbnail in a Word, Excel, PowerPoint or OpenDocument file, or the cover art in an MP3, FLAC, M4A or MP4. Pick the file and a new picture, check the preview, and download a new copy. The tool reads the result back to verify the new thumbnail is really inside. Your original is never changed. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
